Georgian honored at National Traffic Safety Conference
(Atlanta, GA...September 4) Jennie Glasgow of Sandy Springs received the prestigious “Safety Champion” award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the 42nd annual conference of the National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders (NAWHSL) in Savannah last week. Glasgow was honored for her 40 years of volunteer work in highway traffic safety in Georgia and throughout the nation.
In 1969, she started the first occupant safety education program in the nation, called “Bee a Buckler” Safety Program, to educate the scouts in her Girl Scout Troop about the importance of buckling up. Utilizing all volunteers and private donations for their educational materials, the program mushroomed across the nation and soon in five other countries. The program is still going strong and includes education on safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats, as well as all other safe driving practices.
This is the first “Safety Champion” Award given to a Georgian since NHTSA began presenting the special award. Glasgow has served as the Georgia Representative to NAWHSL since 1983, having been appointed to this position by the past four governors. She has served NAWHSL in numerous capacities including President, and is now the Southeast Regional Director. She is also the State Coordinator for Operation Lifesaver in Georgia, a nonprofit railroad safety educational program.
